The romantic, original love of my life...

Kevin loves to be original. He's also very romantic. I knew when I married him that he was romantic. His hand-written vows made me swoon and his cards to me are always the best. When he wants to surprise me, he goes all out. My engagement was great and I have had several wonderful surprises often since we've been married. Knowing this, I thought that our Valentine's Days would be amazing events! What girl doesn't grow up thinking how great it will be when she finally has a Valentine of her very own!

I soon realized, however, that Kevin is not a fan of Valentine's Day. He loves to be unpredictable. He loves to surprise me. I often get flowers, simply for no reason other than that he loves me! I have to admit, I love it. That's the best way to get flowers. It's amazing to have him pop his head in the door with that little grin on his face and know that he has flowers for me. When he told me he wasn't a fan of Valentine's Day I was shocked. How could such a romantic guy not like Valentine's Day? I asked him why. He said, "Why do we need a day for you to know that I love you? Don't you know it? Don't I show you all of the time?" Well, I couldn't argue with that! Kevin does an amazing job of showing his love to me in so many ways. I also know how ridiculously expensive flowers are, and I know how much it is too eat out on Valentine's Day, so I decided I, too, was fine with not really celebrating it.

Then, the day came. When I came home from school, I had my sweet husband waiting for me with a homemade card! He had done this last year, and I LOVED it! The card really comes from his heart, because he has put his time and effort into making it. It doesn't have some cheesy message in it, because it is the message that he has written, and he is an amazing, romantic writer when he wants to be! I was hoping all the way home that he had made me another homemade card. He had! This one was even better than last year's! It was white and he had cut out these red hearts and pasted them on. It actually made me cry! I was perfectly content with my homemade card. It was heartfelt and beautiful. I should have been happy with that!

Then, I began hearing all of these things about what my friends' boyfriends and husbands had done for them, and I even bugged Kevin by e-mailing him about one of them. I said, "I wouldn't mind romance like that once in awhile!" What am I complaining about? I must be crazy!

Then came today. Today was a long day...it started at 6:15 a.m. and I was on my feet all day. My school was putting on their annual Open House and I was in charge of it. I was literally going ALL DAY LONG. I didn't get home until almost nine. I pulled into the driveway and sadly, Kevin's car was not there. I sighed, trudged inside, and collapsed on the couch. He called a few minutes later to ask if I was home. I said yes and he said he was on his way.

He came through the door a bit later with a HUGE bouquet in his arms. I leaped off of the couch, hugged him, and thought it was a great surprise. They meant so much more to me than they would have on Valentine's Day, and he knew that I would feel that way. He said, "Honey, I planned to get you these all week! I want you to remember, I love to surprise you." I know it's true, and it was just a reminder of my wonderful husband, how much he loves to surprise me, and how I shouldn't doubt him. I love that I never know what's coming next. I love that I never know when to expect a romantic surprise from him. Honey, surprise me anytime you want! I trust you!

Did I mention that he's original? I have never received a single rose from Kevin, which is fine with me! My favourite flowers are lilies. Kevin asked me once, and has always remembered. EVERY arrangement I get always has lilies...some that have bloomed and some that have yet to bloom so I can enjoy them longer! What a guy!

  2. That's nice! Glad you got some pretty flowers! And I agree. I would rather NOT get them on Valentine's, because all I can think of is how much they must have cost at the time, and I love getting things like that totally unexpectedly. (Although it doesn't happen nearly as much for me)

  3. HA HA HA...I love Adrienne's comment...hint, hint to the hubby ;) Flowers are pretty but I've noticed that my affection for them as dwindled in the last few years. In college, I could think of no better thing than to get flowers but now it's ho-hum. And I agree, it's mostly because of the roses...so spendy and everyone gets them. Lilies are more unique...I like gerber daisies too.
