It was one of those games. I was ready to throw my team out the window at half time when the score was 21-3. I have seen it before...last year they won their first 12 games of the season and looked amazing, only to let us down in the playoffs. Last year they lost it in the final seconds of the game with a missed field goal by Mike Vanderjagt.
This year looked good. They were winning again, and not just with their passing game. Their running game was solid even without Edgerrin James. They picked up the all-star South Dakota boy, Adam Vinatieri, as their kicker. He's one of my favorite players for several reasons. He was born and raised in South Dakota, graduated from my alma mater, SDSU, and he was born on my birthday! On top of all of those great qualities, he is perhaps one of the NFL's most clutch kickers. You can always count on him to make the field goal when it matters-and even when it doesn't! I knew that this was it...this was the year. Well, if our defense could get things right.
The defense was looking a little scary. They were the only defense in the NFL to allow 100 yards or more of rushing...every single game. It scared me. The offense seemed to carry them but would that transfer to the post-season?
Suddenly, it was all about the defense. Our amazing offense could not score. We couldn't seem to get the ball into the end zone. If it weren't for the solid skills of the defense combined with Vinatieri's amazing kicking, the Colt's post-season hopes would have been dashed. They squeaked by Kansas City and Baltimore to find themselves in the AFC Championship game versus their arch rivals, the New England Patriots.
At half time, it didn't look good. The Colts went into the locker room down. VERY down. I was fuming. I couldn't believe they were going to choke yet again. I almost switched the station to something else, yet I couldn't abandon my team. I'm so happy I didn't! They came out at the half ready to play some football and made one of the greatest comebacks I have ever seen to win the game 38-34. I think our landlords probably thought Kevin and I were having a fight with all of the screaming and yelling I was doing!
On New England's final play when quarterback Tom Brady threw an interception I jumped out of my chair, screamed, "YES YES YES YES YES YES!" and found myself collapsed on the floor in my excitement!
Whew! I'm still reeling. I immediately called my dad to celebrate...I only wish I could join him for the big game in two weeks! GO COLTS GO!!!!!
