Well, our little guy got his first stitches this weekend. I had sort of been dreading the day basically since he was born, but in the end it wasn't as bad as I thought!
He went to a CFL game with Daddy, and at halftime was playing around and took a little tumble, which resulted in a cut on the back of his head. They took a trip to first aid and there he was bandaged up like a car crash victim! After returning to their seats Rusty wanted to stay and watch the rest of the game but this Mama said, "No way! Bring my baby home to me!"
Once they arrived home, I could see Rusty was in good spirits, but upon inspecting the cut it started to ooze-I know, gross-and so we decided a trip to the ER was in order. I buckled him up and off we went while Kev stayed with the sleeping Rocky.
Rusty handled it like a pro! Luckily I had the foresight to pack up his backpack with a snack and one of his favorite-and LOOONNNNGGG-Dr. Suess books, so we were well prepared. The ER was surprisingly quick and got him in right away. Perhaps due to the fact that it was a head injury? We arrived there just before 11 and were on our way home by 11:50 p.m. I was shocked...and thankful!
They put on some freezing gel for about twenty minutes and then stitched him up with three stitches while I held him on my lap and read to him. Their was the senior resident and an intern working on him, and both kept saying that they couldn't believe how cooperative he was! He only cried at the very end, when a piece or two of his hair got stuck in the hinges of the doctor's scissors and pulled hard! Even at that, he was fine after a little sticker therapy-TWO stickers, a pumpkin AND Blue's Clues!-and he even thanked the doctors on our way out.
I was pretty proud of our little guy. He did great and handled everything well. I am also thankful for the ER staff. They were quick and they did a great job. The stitches are very even and Rusty's head is healing great. One other thing I was thankful for was how deeply they questioned me. Five different adults questioned me on exactly how this had happened. Knowing that Kev and I are good parents to Rusty and this truly was an accident, this did not bother me, but I appreciated that the doctors and nurses were doing their due diligence to make certain that this truly was exactly that...an accident. The protection of children is an important thing!
