I don't know how I let them talk me into it. My Bible 9 class was begging for weeks to get a pet...they wanted a turtle, or a lizard. I was sooooo not into that. I don't want to deal with taking care of a turtle or a lizard. It seems like a lot of work and no matter how much they promise to take care of the pet we all know who will really be taking care of this pet...me.
Finally, I caved and got them a beta fish. I know these fish. I had one for much of my university years and I know that they are hardy and can be great pets. You can forget to feed them for a few days and they won't starve. They don't need a walk...you only have to clean their tank from time to time.
My students were thrilled! I have enjoyed seeing them interact with the fish. A high school grade 11 tough guy basketball player daily comes over to my desk to "talk" to the fish. I'm not sure...I think perhaps it gives him the mental break he needs and helps him to refocus. The fish has been a huge hit!
