Playing Hookey

Man, I have never wanted to play hookey from work as badly as I did today. I can't even describe the crazy pull I felt to blow off the day of mindless meetings and just drive in the opposite direction until I hit the beach.

I guess the last two years I have always been focused on major things at the end of the year, so I didn't really have time to think about how gorgeous the weather was. I also think that I didn't realize how many great beaches were so close to my humble abode! I always grew up thinking about how great it would be to just waste the day away lying on the beach reading a book, or perhaps splashing in the water. After heading down to English Bay on Friday night I have felt this great needto go for a swim in the ocean and spend an afternoon soaking some much needed vitamin D into my body. I think that maybe it's because I heard the waves crashing up against the beach the way that I love so much or perhaps it is because I got such a good whiff of that ocean air but whatever the reason, I'm craving a lazy day at the beach.

I spent the morning marking English 10 exams and when Jen and I went outside at lunch we felt the pull...the pull to play hookey. We started to talk about how great it would be to just walk away from the staff meeting that loomed before us and catch some zzz's on the water's edge. It would have only taken us about an hour to get into Vancouver from Abbotsford. But alas, we are good, dutiful employees. After lunch we walked back into the air-conditioned, cinderblock walls that are our school and got back to work. As I sat in the library for the two hour marathon staff meeting I couldn't help but look out the big windows and picture myself lying in my swim suit, soaking up the rays. I guess I'll have to wait for another day!
