Out of Touch

Our Internet has not worked since Friday. It's amazing how much this changes my world. I didn't realize how much I depended on that little light to be green instead of flashing red. It has shifted everything. I don't have time to catch up on my e-mail, because I don't really have a spare moment at school. I couldn't get a test written for my Spanish 12 class over the weekend because I had e-mailed it home and couldn't access it. I am way behind on my blog reading and writing...I am currently writing this in the five minutes I have left of my lunch break.

The Internet is my main form of communication! My sister just returned from an amazing trip to Peru and I have yet to look at her pictures or even talk to her about it. Why? Because even my phone line is dependent on the Internet. It's amazing how technology works, but when it goes down...wow.

The Internet fix it man is supposed to come today. I hope he can figure out what is wrong because I feel so out of touch. It's funny, really. The Internet was just getting going during my university years. I laugh with my students about how I used ICQ instead of MSN Messenger. Now not a day goes by that I'm not online somehow, for some reason. Last summer when I was in Europe for 3 weeks I "talked" to my husband in Oregon through MSN. He was in the middle of a course for his masters, but he was talking to me as I sat in an Internet café halfway around the world. I have no idea how I would survive being so far away from my family without blogs, e-mails, Internet phone, or Messenger!

This morning my dad was able to call me on my cell to pass on a message for my sister. She didn't have a phone card, so she couldn't get ahold of me. I said, "Man, I can't wait to get our Internet back." My sixty something father replied, "Yeah, I remember when I thought computers were stupid and now I freak out when ours isn't working." I remember those days...I would patiently teach him how to use Microsoft Word and now he is an Internet guru!

All I can say is this: Come back to me, dear Internet...please come back!

  1. I can feel your pain. Last year, when my computer was on the fritz for about 2 weeks, I felt like I was in withdrawal. (how sad is that?) In a way, I think it was good because it showed me how dependant I had become on my computer but at the same time, it was my main mode of communication with friends and family! I hope you get your problem resolved soon! :)
