The Haircut

We experienced yet another parent/child rite of passage yesterday...Rusty got his very first haircut! He had been needing for awhile. He had the 1970s news anchor whispy sides going on and the cute little curl in the back was getting longer and longer. We thought since his birthday party is on Sunday, now was the time. We geared up for it, knowing that it was a big deal! Kevin even told Rusty that we would be going to get his haircut and such that morning.
Finally, it was time and we were off to the mall! We had a friend recommend a great place there that only does kids' cuts. They have it all set up so the kids can sit in a car or on an animal of some sort. Their capes are kid sized and at the end they get a toy and a balloon. It seemed a bit pricey, but we figured it was worth it for the first time and in the end we were glad we went there. She knew just what to do and they even saved the sample of his hair, put it on a card with his name, age and the date and then laminated it for me! Overall it was a great experience, but let the pictures tell you the TRUE story of the first haircut!
Step One: Put baby into car, watch him smile, laugh and wave with glee! Think to yourself, "Hmmm...maybe this won't be so bad after all!" Step Two: Put the cape on the baby. Again, watch him smile in glee and wave and drive the car. Realize that he has no idea what is coming.

Step Three: The sweet hair stylist brings out the clippers and begins singing a lovely little song along the lines of "Sweet baby...oh sweet baaaby!" Watch as your son dissolves into tears at the sight of the clippers and begins screaming and reaching for you. Try your best to comfort him.

Step Four: Think that you are done, only to realize that there are a few more spots that need to be trimmed. Watch as your son begs you through hand language to get him DOWN OUT OF THE CAR WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME MOM AND DAD!??

Step Five: Continue to hug your son....lose a piece of your own hair in the process when the stylist accidentally clips it as she is running the clippers through baby boy's hair. Watch the chunk of your hair fall to the floor and think, "I'm glad that I have enough hair that the little bit I just lost won't be noticed!"
Step Six: Give your son kisses and assure him that it is almost done, almost done, almost done!

Step Seven: Finish with the clippers and trim with the scissors. This is not quite as traumatic, but baby boy still tries to escape from the car that before brought him great joy.

Step Eight: Finish! Help baby boy remove the offensive cape that before seemed to not be an issue. Hold him and snuggle with him.

Step Nine: Help baby boy pick out dinosaur toy. Watch as a smile comes over his face and he seemingly forgets about the haircut and proceeds to chew on dinosaur toy. Smile and say, "Oh how handsome you are Rusty!"

Step Ten: Put baby back into car and watch him smile, wave and grin as though nothing has happened!

Finally, admire how handsome your two boys are...think of how lucky you are to have two great guys in your life to love!
