Vancouver 2010

They are almost here! The Olympics start on Friday and Olympic fever is running high here in the Lower Mainland. Not everyone is a fan of the Olympics being here, and that is fine for them. I, however, am thrilled!

My entire life I have loved the Olympics. My sisters and I used to watch them faithfully and I have to admit, I was quite sure that somehow, someway, I would grow up and be a famous figure skater-even though I could barely hobble across our pond. I loved everything about them. I loved the stories behind the athletes, I loved the way that someone obscure could become the hero of the games, I loved the ceremonies...it is just amazing. I love the goodwill that comes with the games. I love the way that countries from all over the world come together to celebrate such an amazing event. I always, always dreamed of one day going to an Olympic event, but wondered how that was even remotely possible.

When I was in high school I got a chance to go to the U.S. Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I enjoyed seeing where the athletes trained and even seeing some of the famous athletes there in training at the time! I again hoped to some day attend an Olympic event.

I moved to Canada in July of 2003, just as Vancouver was awarded the bid to host the 2010 Olympic games. At the time, that seemed ages away, and I didn't really think about it. Now, that time is HERE! We are hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics! All of the events that I have always seen on TV will now be happening here. We have been watching construction for years, we have seen the people complaining and we have seen the excitement and now...it is HERE! We are hosting the Olympics! My dream to attend an Olympic event was possibly closer.

Then, the tickets started coming out, and they were expensive. We were frustrated, but Kevin promised me that I WOULD get to go to an Olympic event. He knew that this was part of my life long "Wish List." I asked him repeatedly, and finally decided to trust that he could make it happen! He came through! TODAY HE SURPRISED ME WITH TICKETS TO AN OLYMPIC EVENT! No, we can't afford to go to skating or major Canadian hockey games or anything like that, but I am soooo excited about what we ARE doing!

We are going to see Women's Moguls at Cypress Mountain! It's a day of fun! We have to ride a bus up, we get to see the qualifying round AND the medal round! The top FIVE WOMEN are either from Canada or the U.S., so we are likely to see either a Canadian or an American medal or possibly even both! I am so excited! This is a dream come true for me...now we just need to find babysitting! Hopefully my in-laws will come through, yet again!

Tomorrow the Olympic Flame comes through our town. We are ready! We have plans to get up and out on the route nice and early...hopefully pictures will follow! I have the Olympic Fever, you bah hum bugs, don't bother to comment!

Check out the video below to get into the Olympic Spirit!

  1. I can’t wait for the Winter Olympics, especially men’s hockey! I am a huge NHL fan, so it will be neat to see players represent their countries. In some cases, there are going to be players on the same NHL team competing against each other during the Olympics. It will definitely be a lot of fun to watch, even though the NHL will shut down during the time.
