It started on Monday. Rusty went to Nana and Papa's for a little visit after the weekend away. He came home inconsolable. He could not be settled, didn't want to eat, was sooo tired. He would only be settled by me holding him and rocking him. It was more of the same that night, and the next day and the next night. He was spiking a fever of 102 every night. We didn't know what to do. We were continually seeing this face. This poor, pathetic, sad, little face...a lot.
That's not our boy. Our Rusty has tons of energy. He is all smiles. He loves to joke around. He eats...a lot. He was none of these things. He was lethargic. He was crying. He was barely eating. He was up crying for seemingly no reason in the middle of the night. Finally, this morning, my friend that is a nurse said she thought I should take Rusty in to the doctor.
The doctor took one glance at his ear and said "Oh that is a bad infection!" She then looked at the other ear and said there was infection in that one too! Poor guy! And to think we were originally chalking it up to post-trip fussiness and readjusting to his schedule. I'm so glad I took him in. She said she also figured he was probably working with a pretty sore throat too, but she wasn't going to torture him by checking it. She assured me that the antibiotics would cure whatever was ailing him.
So, Rusty starting the first antibiotics of his life this afternoon. They are banana flavored, and thankfully he took them without a problem. I just hope he feels better soon. I'm ready to have my happy, silly Rusty back.
