I very eagerly anticipated their arrival! Although I had just seen them in April they hadn't seen Rusty for almost a full year. He has changed so much since then, and I just knew they would have a blast with him. Plus, I got to have them all to myself-well, myself and my family-no sharing! I love the rest of my family, but it was so great to have focused time with my mom and dad. It has been way too long.
They drove straight through-20 hours!-and arrived on Friday midday and the fun began! It's easiest to just break it down into days, so here goes!
Friday
Friday was Canada Day around here. Even though they were tired, they didn't want to just sleep the afternoon away because they would be all out of whack, so they took showers, got ready and we went down to the local Canada Day celebrations. Rusty had fun showing Grandpa and Grandma all that he wanted to see, and we finished off by heading home to BBQ some dinner. It was early to bed that night for all of us, but a fun first evening none the less.
Saturday
On Saturday we were busy, busy, busy! Baby Rocky's baby dedication was going to be the next day at church and we were planning a BBQ for our friends afterward so my mom and I were off to Costco to get supplies while Grandpa spent TWO HOURS at the park with Rusty! Super fun times for them both! Rusty was soooo tired that he took a super long nap that afternoon. We enjoyed just relaxing and playing in the backyard that evening.
Sunday
Sunday was Rocky's special day. We were so thrilled to have my parents here for Rocky's dedication. It was special to share that with them, and we also enjoyed having them meet some of our close friends that came over for the BBQ afterward.
Monday
On Monday we went out to Krause Berry Farms! YUM! Rusty helped Grandma and Grandpa pick two buckets full of delicious strawberries while I held little Rocky-sleeping away-in the Ergo. Afterward he played in the sandbox at the farm and also enjoyed some yummy treats! It was our fourth of July so we also remembered to celebrate that with the boys in their America shirts! That evening my dad went golfing with Kev and some of his buddies, so my mom and I ordered pizza and watched a chick flick! It was so nice to do something so normal like that with her.
Tuesday
Tuesday was more golf for the boys. They headed off around 11 in the morning, so my mom and I packed the boys up and went to Burnaby Village Museum! I had never been there before, and it is free this summer to celebrate their 40th birthday. I didn't know if Rusty would really enjoy it much, but he LOVED it. He was off and running and really loved "peeking" inside the various buildings. He is also often very cautious when doing new things, so I didn't know what his reaction to the carousel would be, but he grinned from ear to ear and even giggle when riding it with my mom. We had two tickets so he got to ride again with me. The boys were home that evening and we just relaxed because we were all so tired from our fun day. My mom played bubbles outside with Rusty and we all just chilled. Seeing a theme here? Fun in the morning, relaxing in the evening?
Wednesday
We decided that Wednesday was the day to finally take Rusty mini golfing. He had been wanting to go, and Grandpa was happy to oblige. We took him to a nearby course and he did great. He had fun whacking the ball all over the place, but got a little tired by the 16th hole. He was lying down on the green not in an obnoxious way, but in an "I am SOOOOO tired" way! He finished out the round and really loved the end when the ball went down the hole for good. He wanted to hit all of our balls down and we would say "GOODBYE BALL!" with each one that dropped down the hole! That evening was pretty gorgeous, so we set up the sprinkler and he had a blast running in it with Grandpa. We had so much fun that we decided to have a picnic outside as well and loaded up on all of the good for you foods like pizza, mac and cheese and the plethora of fruit we had leftover!
Thursday
Our time together was coming to an end and we had some tired boys on our hands. We took it easy on Thursday and simply took the boys to the nearby Play Zone. Rusty loved the bouncy castles and sports activities.
Friday
Our last day together. We were sad that Grandma and Grandpa would be leaving soon and decided to end it with a bang. We skytrained downtown and took an Aquabus to Granville Island. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch outside, some shopping and Rusty got Grandpa to take him in the Adventure Zone at the Kids' Market. What a FUN and BRAVE Grandpa! He said other kids in there were throwing the balls at him. Pretty funny! Rusty really loved riding the train with his grandparents and even got to "drive" one. He was sitting in the front seat and was sure that it was his train and he was driving. Taking the Aquabus was a new experience even for me, and one that I will definitely repeat! It was wonderful to sit and take in the gorgeous sights around False Creek.
Overall, we had such a great time with Grandma and Grandpa. The boys really solidified relationships with them. My favorite shot of the week:
