in the trenches

I read an article on Huffpost the other day that got me to thinking. It was a word from empty nesters to those of us in the so-called "trenches" of parenting. I think these sorts of articles can often make us "young parents"-am I even really a young parent??-cringe. We don't want to be told to cherish the time because we are in the middle of it all and doing our best to cherish it. Actually I don't find it that hard to cherish it even in the hard times but I think that has something to do with our multiple pregnancy losses and also watching so many I know experience fertility issues or the loss of children. That's something that has a way of keeping you on the grateful train...but back to the point at hand. The article was a good one and got me thinking about my own kids and how quickly my time with them is flying by.

Rusty is six. SIX!! I honestly have no idea how that happened. He is this incredibly delightful little boy. He loves learning and he loves sports, Pokemon, and stats. He and Kev can talk stats for hours, seriously. I like to think that I will remember all of the awesome things he says and does but after reading that article I realized that I probably won't.

I'm terrible at the whole "writing things down" stuff. The boys' baby books are half full and I have no idea when they even got their first teeth. I specifically bought Ruby a very simple baby book hoping I will keep up with it, but it was Rusty that reminded me the other day when looking through it that Ruby had rolled over and I needed to fill in that spot!!

One thing that I do enjoy is blogging and I love looking back at my old posts to see what was happening in our lives at certain times. It made me realize that blogging can be my form of a baby book.

Maybe you all don't care about these mundane details of my kids' lives, but I definitely do and someday I'm going to be so glad I have them. That being said, I'm going to try to be more deliberate. I want to try to do at least one post a week where I ask the kids a question and also reflect on them from that week. I want to remember my time "in the trenches."
